What is quartersawn white oak?
Quartersawn white oak is cut differently than traditional oak to show more of a straight grain. For our lumberjack fans out there, the lumber is cut as slabs radiating out from the tree’s center instead of straight through the center with parallel cuts. In this old-fashioned method, logs are cut into quarters and then cut on the diagonal (from the center toward the outer edges). This is what gives quartersawn white oak its distinctive straight-line grain. It also can give the wood some reflective, lighter flecks throughout, signature characteristics that add a bit of flair.
Because of its design properties, quartersawn white oak is a popular choice for high-end Arts & Crafts or Mission-style furniture as well as kitchen cabinetry.
