Kitchen remodels breathe new life into your home now and the investment can pay off nicely over time—as you use it for yourself and when you sell your home. As we noted in one of our previous blog posts, kitchen remodeling offers an extremely high return on investment. The current ROI is somewhere between 80 and 92%, depending on the style and the products you choose.
Upgrading your kitchen can be costly, but it’s also the best return on investment in your home.
“The kitchen really is the castle itself. This is where we spend our happiest moments and where we find the joy of being a family.”
– Mario Batali
“The more you know, the more you can create. There’s no end to imagination in the kitchen.”
– Julia Child
Homeowners may get a bit of sticker shock when they learn that kitchen remodels can cost between $20,000-$50,000 on average. But rather than solely focusing on the cost, homeowners should approach the kitchen remodeling process as though it were an investment in the future of their home.
As you begin to think about your new kitchen upgrade, you may have a lot of ideas about what to keep and what to replace. Here are some important questions to consider when planning a kitchen renovation:
- How do you envision your new kitchen to look?
- What exactly do you want to do with the available space?
- What functional features are you considering?
- Based on your initial space or current design, is the layout ideal?
- How much do you want to spend? What’s too expensive?
What will a kitchen remodel cost me?
When it comes to budgeting for a kitchen remodel, the general rule of thumb is that it should cost between 5% and 15% of your home’s value. As you increase the size of your project in terms of the square footage, you can expect to pay more. Your renovation may also be affected by the rising costs of raw materials and even the city where you reside.
- Medium-sized kitchens – A medium-sized space is typically defined as an area between 75 and 100+ square feet, with renovations costing between $15,000 and $30,000. For between 150 and 175 square feet, which is around the average kitchen size, renovation costs range from $20,000 to $50,000.
- Large kitchens – In comparison, a large renovation of 200 square feet or more can cost $50,000 to $100,000 and beyond for upscale remodels. In this case, extensive work is done, including the addition of built-in appliances, a double oven, a seating island, a recycling station, and more.
What is the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?
Cabinets are the costliest part of a kitchen renovation. This is largely because they are the most prominent element in the kitchen. In an upscale remodeling project, new kitchen cabinets can cost 20-40% of the entire renovation budget. The remaining remodeling expenses will go toward new countertops, appliances, flooring, and labor.
The average cost of new cabinets is generally upwards of $15,000. However, if you consider your lifestyle, how you use your kitchen, and aesthetics, you will see that the cost-benefit ratio is in favor of new cabinetry. For instance, does the existing cabinetry serve your storage and workspace needs? Can you retrofit your existing cabinetry with the latest accessories? Will it complement your new countertops and flooring? The answer to these questions is “probably not.” Plus, if you are reconfiguring your kitchen layout, trying to shoehorn in old cabinets will be tough if downright impossible.
Long story short, keeping your existing cabinets will hamper the overall design and functionality of your remodeled kitchen.
As you are deciding the different design aspects of your new kitchen, it’s important to figure out your options for replacing the cabinetry. When shopping for cabinets, ask your home improvement center or kitchen designer about the different materials, features, and styles that are available on the market. You may wish to go with all-custom cabinets or choose semi-custom stock cabinets (we carry some of the best on the market). Talk to your contractor or design expert about preferences and needs–and what fits with your kitchen remodeling budget.
