Trending countertop design

Bring a contemporary look to your kitchen with these elements:

  • Contrasting materials – mixing natural or engineered stone countertops with wood is a great way to bring in warmth and elements of nature. This “old-and-new” design trend suits many historic and older Hudson Valley homes beautifully, as it adds visual interest and charm without going too modern in style.
  • Integrated sink – integrating the sink with the counter surface has long been popular in bathroom vanities but we are seeing integrated sinks becoming more popular for kitchens. This provides a seamless, clean look. Integrated sinks work well with quartz, granite, and marble countertops.
  • Full backsplash – these are also known as slab or panel backsplashes. A full backsplash extends the look of your countertop, lending a feeling of height to the area with a less cluttered, more minimalist look. Plus, a full backsplash protects your walls against splashes and stains, and since it is one surface, there’s less fuss when it comes to cleaning.
  • Spice ledge – our designers integrate a small ledge against the backsplash, usually over the cooktop as a distinctive visual element or as part of a full backsplash (a built-in shelf of the same stone material). This creates visual interest while providing the convenience of always keeping your favorite spices close at hand. Our designers can also incorporate a spice niche into the backsplash—a small alcove to house your go-to spices and condiments.
  • Boxed or waterfall kitchen islands – with the trends in kitchen design leaning toward clean, minimal styles, these two trends bring sophistication and elegance to your kitchen island in quartz, marble, or granite.

Boxed-in islands with waterfall edges (or legs) are a great choice for ultra-modern kitchens. This sleek design makes the island appear to be wrapped in natural or engineered stone on both ends. The “waterfall” term refers to the fact that the island has a single, beautiful design that flows from the top surface over the sides, all the way to the floor. What you see is all the gorgeous colors and veining of your countertop material—no decorative doors or detailed wood trim to look at.

Trending countertop materials

At Affordable Granite & Cabinetry, we carry a broad array of natural and engineered stone countertops, including the latest in-demand materials.

  • Sintered stone and ultracompact stone are natural countertop materials that are extremely strong and durable. They are also more eco-friendly than other countertop options because of how they are manufactured. (These countertops do not contain any resin or polymers and use less silica during the manufacturing process).

Sintered stone and ultracompact stone are an excellent alternative to quartz and can be used for kitchens or bathroom vanities. These products, which come in large slabs, also work well in areas prone to heat fluctuations (making them a great choice for outdoor kitchens or fireplace surrounds as well).

  1. Sintered stone is manufactured from natural minerals, such as quartz and porcelain, that are compacted at extremely high temperatures and pressure to bond them.
  2. Ultracompact stone is made from a combination of quartz, porcelain, and glass, which are also mixed under high heat and pressure.

The result is a nonporous countertop surface that is stain-proof, scratch-proof, and scorch-proof, available in a variety of thicknesses and finishes. We carry Lapitec sintered stone countertops and the Dekton line of ultracompact stone countertops.

  • Porcelain – porcelain countertops have become more popular in recent years. Porcelain gives you unmatched realism in its engineered patterns, and because of its lighter weight, it is excellent for vertical installations (like those full backsplashes). Porcelain countertops come in different glazes or finishes as well as colors and patterns. This countertop material is heat-resistant, non-porous and stain-resistant, and can be cut into many sizes, shapes, or thicknesses.
